LSU Game

Geaux Tigers!!!

Attending an LSU game at Death Valley with Adam, our youngest son, has been on our Bucket List for a while.  The last game Trey (DH) and I attended was in Houston.  It’s been a few years.

Our hope, is that Adam attends LSU in 2024.  At the moment, it’s a toss up between LSU, Duke, and Baylor.  DH and I are both leaning towards LSU.  We will see.  Adam is currently in the 7th grade at a private school, so it will be interesting to see if it changes as he gets a little older.

Driving from Houston, Texas to Baton Rouge, Louisiana took us approximately five hours.  We departed on Friday afternoon after work and stayed until Sunday morning.  Trey is a little hard of hearing.  On our drive there, Trey is hearing this rattling noise in his truck – I can hear it too.  We cannot locate the rattling noise.  So, we spent some time looking for it, pulled over, moved things around, and threw out some trash.  Cannot find the source.  So, he blares the Fox News channel to disguise the rattling.  The Fox News channel is in a heated debate all while Trey has two air fresheners blowing through the a/c vents that are making my eyes water and is giving me a headache.  It’s as though we have 10 fighting, screaming children in the back and they have all just sprayed too much cologne on themselves.  Are we there yet?

We stayed in a lovely, modern condo from Airbnb (River House Baton Rouge).  The great thing about an Airbnb is that they are less expensive than hotels and you get a full kitchen, washer and dryer.  It’s truly a home away from home.  This one had a nice master bedroom.  The pullout mattress for our 5′-7″ 130 lb 13 year old, however, was subpar.  Next time, I will insure we stay in one with two regular beds.  Adam is no longer a little boy.

There was a train that kept waking me up.  Trey and Adam both seemed to sleep through it.  The train horn would blare at odd hours throughout the night.  I did not sleep well.  The condo is on the ground floor, so you can hear the gate clanging and the horn from the train as you are inches from the train track.  So, I woke up quite sleepy on Saturday morning.

On Saturday morning, we ate breakfast at Brew Ha-Ha!  Isn’t this such a great name?  I found this gem on the Zagat app.

There was art hung in every room from the local artists.  The art was hung on iron rods and twine.  To me, the iron rod is too heavy for the wall; solid but heavy.  And, I would have used fishing line instead of twine.  The fishing line would not have been as noticeable.  Fun decor in every room.  It reminds me of some of the restaurants I would find in Austin, Texas with the local artists.  The restaurant gets free decor and the local artists get to show their art.

I love the color red.  I like this red art above Adam’s head.  Adam is cute too.

Cinnamon French Toast was on Adam’s menu.  Did I mention that he just drank a large glass of chocolate milk and ate 1/2 a brownie?

For my Skillet, I ordered eggs, cheddar cheese, bacon and mushrooms.  It was yummy! For DH’s he ordered eggs, cheese, sausage, bell peppers and onions.  The bell peppers and onions were not cooked (i.e sautéed).  They were literally cut up and thrown on top of the eggs, but hidden under the cheese until DH took his first bite – not good.  I loved my Skillet, but DH will order something else next time.  My cappuccino was fabulous; I didn’t even need to add sweetener.

Here’s the menu for future reference.

After breakfast, we had some time to kill, so we drove over to the Red Stick.

Baton Rouge dates from 1699, when French explorer Sieur d’Iberville leading an exploration party up the Mississippi River saw a reddish cypress pole festooned with bloody animals and fish that marked the boundary between the Houma and Bayou Goula Indian tribal hunting grounds.

They called the pole and its location “le bâton rouge”, or red stick.

Since European Settlement, Baton Rouge has been governed by France, Britain, Spain, Louisiana, the Florida Republic, the Confederate States, and the United States.

These graves are for the Clark family. Dr. Joseph Samuel Clark (June 7, 1871 – October 27, 1944) was the first President of the Southern University at Baton Rouge.
Octavia Head Clark (September 27, 1880 – April 29, 1959) was the wife of Dr. Joseph clark and mother of…
Felton Grandison Clark (October 13, 1903 – July 5, 1970) F.G. Clark was the son of Joseph Samuel Clark and was also the second President of the Southern University at Baton Rouge.

Between the father/son at the helm, the University saw enrollment soar from 500 to over 10,000 and at least 37 of the 114 current buildings were built. Dr. Joseph Clark was president from 1914 – 1938. His son, Felton G. Clark from 1938 – 1969.  These are the only graves on campus.  Source:  http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM86BJ_Joseph_S_FG_Clark_Baton_Rouge_LA

And, that’s all for your history lesson today, folks.

Getting into the game was a breeze.  The game began at 6 p.m. and we arrived there around 1 p.m.  It’s amazing how many LSU fans were already set up with their tents and/or motor homes for the tailgating party.  We found free parking just around the corner behind the RV parking area.  It wasn’t that much further to walk and we saved twenty bucks.

My two loves walking down Stadium Drive to Death Valley.  I couldn’t snap the photograph quick enough, but as we were driving to park at the stadium, I came upon a blonde poodle.  The blonde poodle had been shaved.  It had been shaved around its tummy except for the following three letters:

2005 was a great year!

I may have to use this photo for our Christmas cards.

Doesn’t Adam look thrilled to take another picture?

Mike VII is a beautiful tiger.

Adam and I love Kettle Corn.  You can smell it for miles and it’s just so darn yummy! I didn’t get a shot of the Alligator Balls (similar to boudin balls, but made with alligator meat instead of boudin) or the meat pie that was consumed.  Was this meat pie better than Trey’s delectable meat pies?  Will have to get DH’s opinion.

I finally captured a genuine smile of Adam here.

Can you find Adam?  He didn’t feel like walking any more.  Is he growing?  Or, was it the springs poking him in the back from the night before?

The gates opened at 4 p.m.

SCORE!  Another Tiger Touchdown!!!

Getting back to the condo was tricky.  The condo is one mile away and we ended up having to drive 12 miles out of the way to circle back around to get back to the condo.  The police had shut down anyone from turning left back into the campus.  Really?  Really guys?  We just want to get to the condo a mile away.

All in all, it was a great game and a great trip!!!

Our good friend, Simi, made this LSU wreath for us.  She can be found on Facebook at Wreath’s by Simi.
