Interested in having your butterfly garden certified:  North American Butterfly Association (NABA) Butterfly Garden Certification

Here is a monthly checklist to maintain our beautiful gardens in Zone 9:

January

It’s good to have several frost cloths on hand. The plants will breathe easier with these. In Houston, we usually get a couple of days below 32°F.

February

At this time, I get tired off seeing all of the dead limbs and am chomping at the bit to trim back all of the dead branches.

14th – Valentine’s Day is a great day to remember to trim your roses to 18″. Be sure to stop by your friendly Starbucks and ask for their used coffee grounds. Sprinkle the grounds around your rose bushes and your ferns. This is a great way to recycle coffee grounds and give your soil and plants extra yumminess!

For a beautiful weed free lawn this spring, now is the time to apply a pre-emergent. I recommend NitroPhos Barricade or Bonide Weed Beater Complete. Available at Enchanted Gardens or Enchanted Forest.

Since I live in the Fort Bend County, I am going to refer to the Fort Bend Master Gardeners page religiously.  Your county annex is a fantastic resource if you don’t live in Zone 9.

Plant your bluebonnet seeds now.  They will sprout in February.  I purchase a 3 lb. bag from a local feed store.
